Ducked in to this bar of about 200 to catch the last couple songs of a set
around 12:30, I guess. The last set started about half an hour later with
the Col. on rhythm guitar, some dude on drums, an English guy with a shaved
head who's name escapes me on keyboards, (amazing player!), and local Atlanta
guitarist Barry Richman. The keyboard player did a hilarious impression of
the Colonel, waving his hand in the air with the bluesy vocals going. He
then took the vocals to a total extreme, as he also did with his synth
playing---I mean just going apeshit with energy. Quite a spectacle! The
Col. was content to let this guy and Richman trade off searing, and I mean
super-hot licks wrapped around blues-based tunes like "Lovelight". A couple
songs into the set I caught Fishman caused a commotion by taking over for the
other guy and set the pace for many more torrid jams. It was great checking
him out in a different setting with different players---what a great drummer
he is! I might mention that it's a good thing I'm 6'6", because this place
was packed and there's no way I could've seen shit otherwise. Fish had a
look of serious concentration most of the time, although he's start to grin
when Richman would find an even higher note to tear the hell out of of one of
his many sick solos---catch this guy if you get a chance! Anyway, I must've
bailed right before Mike came on because I left right around 2:30 assuming
that nobody else was showing up---stupid me! At least Trey didn't show up,
in which case you wouldn't be reading this because I would've killed myself.
Peace!

I wasn't there, but my good friend Ben Nelson was. In fact, he had the
pleasurable luck to tell Mike about the bluegrass goin' down after the show.
The company Ben works for (Oade.com) does work with bands' equipment, and Ben
had to drop off Paul's soundboard for the 7-4-99 show. While he was there, he
mentioned to Mike a bluegrass hoedown that was going on after the show (which
Ben was going to tape) and said he thought Mike might want to check it out.
Sure enough, when Ben arrived, he noticed some familiar faces and had a warm
glow-y feeling for the rest of the night (and the next day, too). The
highlight would have to have been when Mike said thanks for the tip on the
show...
Setlist unknown
Fish and Mike played with Col. Bruce Hampton's current band (not ARU, not
Fiji Mariners) at The Brandyhouse in Atlanta on Saturday July 3rd. The
show started around 11 pm. Fish joined stage around 2am. Mike arrived
around 2:30 and was onstage within minutes. The band played past 3am.
The Col.'s band also played The Brandyhouse on Sunday night. This second
show was broadcast on Z-93 92.9 FM as part of the "Dunham's Living Room
Show", which also featured an interview the Dunham's taped with Mike
Gordon at his hotel room on Saturday morning; as well as clips from a
recent Day By The River show in Colorado.
