Willie Nelson is known as a singer, songwriter, actor, philanthropist and activist. He organized the first Farm Aid concert and still remains active in the event. It was at the 1998 Farm Aid concert that Nelson and Phish crossed paths. In addition to his solo set, Nelson jammed with Phish on such songs as “Moonlight in Vermont” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?”
To try and sum up Nelson’s career is a daunting task. As a solo artist, he is best known for his renditions of country staples and other standards such as “Georgia on My Mind” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.” He has long been seen as a representative of country music in general, including his participation (with Kenny Rogers) in USA For Africa’s “We Are the World” project. Nelson has recorded with Ray Charles, Neil Young and Carlos Santana, and even utilized the benefits of modern technology to record a duet with the late Hank Williams. Perhaps most interesting is the number of songs that have been written about Willie Nelson, including “Willie” (Hank Cochran and Merle Haggard), “Willy the Wandering Gypsy and Me” (Billy Joe Shaver) and “Willie, Won’t You Sing a Song with Me” (George Burns).
