The Flecktones are Béla Fleck on banjo, Victor Wooten on bass, Jeff Coffin on saxophone, and Futureman on percussion and Drumitar. Wooten is highly decorated, including Bassist of the Year accolades at the Nashville Music Awards and from Bass Player Magazine. He has also been awarded two Grammys for Best Instrumental Composition and has recorded several solo albums. Coffin has performed and recorded with the Dave Matthews Band, Branford Marsalis, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Bruce Hornsby, The Dixie Chicks and David Grisman, among many others. As a respected session musician, Coffin has appeared on over twenty albums, and he sat in with Mike’s band ZYDN on 10/13/03. Add in Fleck himself and Futureman – Roy Wooten, brother of Vic, whose unique Drumitar (a combination of guitar, synthesizer and drum machine) rounds out the quartet’s sound.
Individually, each member of The Flecktones is a renowned musician and respected innovator. Together, they have twice appeared on the Phish stage, though Béla Fleck has guested solo on other occasions. On 8/21/93, the Flecktones (in the pre-Coffin days) joined in for the better part of the second set, including “Fee,” “Llama” and “David Bowie.” Almost four years later, on 7/9/97, the Flecktones (with Coffin) came out during the Tramps Jam in “You Enjoy Myself” and stayed out for a raucous “Ghost” and a set-closing “Poor Heart.” Mike and Fishman returned the favor on 2/14/98, joining the Flecktones for their encore, featuring a Mike-Wooten bass duel, at a show in Burlington. In 2003, Fleck, Coffin and Futureman appeared on Mike’s solo album, Inside In.
