Raul Rekow may be living a musician’s dream. A self-professed Santana fan, Raul bought his first conga at a pawn shop after seeing Carlos perform live. By age fifteen, he was playing professionally in the Santana cover band Soul Sacrifice. After stints in the bands Malo and Sapo, Rekow joined Carlos in Santana in 1976. Together, along with Karl Perazzo, they added their talents to the memorable 7/25/92 opening set, playing on “You Enjoy Myself,” “Funky Bitch,” and “Llama.” It is Rekow that Phish are singing about in “Walfredo” when they say that the song’s subject, drummer Walfredo Reyes, looked cool behind his drum kit, “but not as cool as Raul.”
