Oteil has long been involved with the music of Phish. As a member of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, he often shared the stage with Phish in the early 1990s. He has also been a member of The Allman Brothers Band since 1997, and has performed with Gov’t Mule. Oteil let his free-form jazz sideshow as a member of Trey’s Surrender to the Air project, and his jazz-funk sideshow as a member of Page’s trio Vida Blue.
In addition to his appearances with the ARU, Oteil has twice graced the Phish stage. On 6/1/90, he added a second bass guitar to “Run Like an Antelope.” And on 5/2/94, Oteil and fellow bass player Stacy Starkweather joined for an odd “Mike’s Song” that saw all the musicians switch instruments on stage.
