Though he had a short-lived nickname of Nancy, Richard Wright has no idea why fans refer to him as “Nancy Taube.” There is some speculation that Nancy Taube was an old-school fan and that fans mistook one “Nancy” for another when labeling setlists. On some recordings, Trey refers to Richard as “Nancy,” though never “Nancy Taube.” Still, fans likely assumed the latter, given earlier errors.
Either way, Richard Wright penned the lyrics to Phish songs “Halley’s Comet” and “I Didn’t Know.” Many early versions of “Halley’s” were sung by Richard; for well-circulated versions, see 5/14/88 and 5/26/89. Richard also sang “I Didn’t Know” at the former. One of his guest appearances was included in Phish’s career highlights video shown at setbreak of the 20th anniversary show on 12/2/03. Wright continues to write and perform songs, and a disc of his recordings was included with some copies of the first edition of The Phish Companion. That was the widest release to date of material he has performed.
