Marley (better known as “Mar Mar”) was Trey's dog, an adorable mixed breed (half brittney spaniel and half golden retriever). Trey held up Marley during the “Harpua” encore on 3/26/92 at Ziggy’s in Winston Salem, NC. In all fairness, there are certainly dozens of Marley appearances on or around the Phish stage, especially in the early days when Marley would even tour with the band.
You can catch a glimpse of Marley in the “Down with Disease” video, as well as in the booklet insert for A Live One. Marley has been credited and thanked in the liner notes to several of Phish’s albums, including her role as “security” in the Picture of Nectar notes.
Marley passed away after a long and happy life on 10/10/00, just a few days after Phish embarked on their hiatus. Marley is on stage in spirit at every Phish show: at the end of the neck of Trey’s signature Languedoc guitars, there is an inlaid image of Marley saying in bubble: “I am the Mar Mar.”
Marley (aka Mar Mar) was Trey's beloved dog, a mixed breed, mostly golden retriever. Once very energetic and protective of Trey, she gradually became a senior citizen by dog standards (14 as of June 1999), and finally passed away.
Trey mentioned Marley in a rambling "Dog Log" (date unrecalled),and held her up during an old encore.
