Jennifer is the trumpet player in Trey’s ‘solo’ band, but her only appearance to date with Phish has come as a vocalist. More precisely, as a rapper. On the first night of the April 2004 Las Vegas run, Jennifer emerged during “Scent of a Mule” to perform a rap “duel” with Trey on Jay-Z’s “Girls Girls Girls.” She met Trey through Dave Grippo at age 17, when Trey was looking for a trumpet player to perform on his One Man’s Trash album, as well as Phish’s Story of the Ghost. (On the latter she, Grippo and James Harvey make up the horn section for “Birds of a Feather.”) When Trey added horns to his solo band for its winter 2001 tour, Jen got the call, and has been in that band ever since, often contributing vocals as well. She and Trey have cooked up a number of playful song-and-dance routines for that band’s shows, and her Vegas rapping was in that spirit. When not performing with Trey, she leads her own outfit, the Jennifer Hartswick Band.
