Bob Weir became the second member of The Grateful Dead to jam with Phish (after Phil Lesh) when he joined them for a three-song encore at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA on 10/6/00. Song selection included a classic Dead cover (“El Paso”) and original (“West L.A. Fadeaway”), as well as a rocking “Chalk Dust Torture.” Some apparent sound problems limited Weir’s involvement in “Chalk Dust” but his vocals and the emotional highlights of the other two songs made it an evening to remember. Weir continues to perform with other Grateful Dead surviving members, as The Dead (with whom Mike sat in on 6/20/03) and similarly re-titled incarnations, and with his side project Ratdog.
